Cluster Lashes vs Classic Lash Extensions: What’s the Difference?
The eyelash extensions industry has come a long way - what started as clunky lashes, or party lashes, has developed into light and flattering eyelash extensions which can be applied with the health of the natural lashes in mind. Let's have a bit of a closer look at the differences between Cluster lashes and Classic lash extensions!
The main difference is how they are applied: Classic lash extensions are attached individually to isolated natural lashes, while Cluster lashes contain several fibres joined at a base and are designed for a different application method. Modern DIY clusters also differ from the traditional, heavier party lashes you may remember.

What Are Cluster Lashes?
Cluster lashes are a collection of individual lash fibres that are grouped together (or 'clustered’) and joined at one end. Traditional party lashes often finish with a thick base and can be made from small, cut sections of a strip lash. Their bases tend to be quite wide and heavy, and they are sometimes offered as an express lash treatment in salons.
However, not all modern clusters are the same. Newer DIY and pre-glued cluster lashes can have lighter fibres and finer bases. Their application method and recommended wear time depend on the individual product, so it’s important to follow its instructions rather than treating every cluster lash in the same way.
What Are Classic Lash Extensions?
Classic lashes are made from synthetic fibres and are applied as one individual extension to one isolated natural lash. Individual extensions are used to create a more natural Classic lash look, whilst multiple lightweight extensions formed into a fan create a Volume lash look.
The number of extensions in a Volume fan is referred to using the letter ‘D’ for dimension. For example, a 2D fan contains two extensions. Unlike a cluster, a professional Volume fan is designed to be applied to one isolated natural lash, with the total weight selected to suit that lash.
So What Is the Difference Between Cluster Lashes and Classic Lashes?
Traditional Cluster lashes can be a bit heavier on the eyes and are intended for temporary wear. Some are applied along the lash line using an appropriate temporary lash adhesive, while newer DIY clusters may be designed for placement underneath the natural lashes. Always follow the placement and wear instructions for the specific product.
Professional eyelash extension glue should never come into contact with the skin. It isn’t designed for skin contact and should only be used for its intended professional application. Incorrect use can cause irritation or an allergic reaction. It should not be used as a substitute for the adhesive or bond specified for DIY clusters.
Unlike individual extensions, clusters are not applied using the same one-to-one isolation technique. If several natural lashes are bonded together, they cannot move and shed independently. This can put tension on the natural lashes as they grow, particularly if the clusters are too heavy or worn beyond the recommended time.
With professional Classic lashes, each extension is attached to an isolated natural lash and sheds with it as part of the natural growth cycle.
Classic lashes and Volume lashes are applied to each individual natural lash with military precision. Using isolating lash tweezers to isolate the individual lashes, you will then apply the lash extensions in layers to achieve suitable coverage. Different lengths, thicknesses and curls can be added to personalise the set and create a unique look for each individual client based on lash length, preferred style, eye and face shape.
Since the beginning of the lash extensions industry, there have been many horror stories of ‘Lash Techs’ using traditional Cluster lashes to create a lash extension look, advertising the service as though they are individual lash extensions. Using heavy clusters with professional extension adhesive, without isolating the natural lashes, can have damaging consequences.
Excessive weight and constant pulling can cause the natural lashes to become damaged. A wide base that bonds several natural lashes together can also lead to stickies, where lashes growing at different rates pull against one another.
Whereas with Classic lashes, you will map out exactly where you want each eyelash extension to go to ensure that you create a symmetrical look for your clients. Classic lash extensions are available in different lengths and thicknesses, allowing you to choose a suitable weight for the natural lashes.
Correct product selection and application help to minimise the risk of damage. Fine or short natural lashes require a careful assessment rather than simply applying the same extension to every client. With proper isolation, extensions can shed with the natural lashes, and after a few weeks it is time to revisit for an infill.
Should Lash Technicians Avoid Cluster Lashes?
As a Lash Technician, it goes without saying that you should never use temporary Cluster lashes as an alternative to Classic or Volume extensions on a client who has booked a professional, semi-permanent eyelash extension treatment.
Clusters have their own place as a temporary beauty product, but they should be used with the compatible adhesive or pre-glued system, following the manufacturer's instructions. They should not be applied with professional eyelash extension glue or advertised as the same treatment as individually isolated extensions.
Premade fans, however, are a different story - these are widely used throughout the lash extension industry to achieve the gorgeous volume that clients desire. Each fan is applied to one isolated natural lash, with its weight and length selected to suit that lash. So if you want to save time whilst maintaining your high standards and immaculate reputation, you could always opt for high quality Premade fans instead!
Can Both Cluster Lashes and Classic Extensions Create a Cat Eye Look?
Yes - cat eye describes the shape of the finished lash look rather than the application method. Both can create an elongated effect, but their products, adhesives and placement techniques are different. For a professional extension set, follow our cat eye lash mapping guide and adapt the lengths to suit your client's natural lashes.
Cluster Lashes vs Classic Lashes FAQs
Are cluster lashes the same as individual lash extensions?
No. Cluster lashes contain several fibres joined at a shared base. Classic lash extensions are applied individually, with one extension attached to one isolated natural lash. This difference affects application, maintenance and removal.
How long can you wear cluster lashes?
Wear time depends on the specific cluster product and adhesive system. Traditional party lashes are intended for temporary wear, while newer DIY products may have different instructions. Follow the manufacturer's stated wear time rather than assuming all clusters can be worn for several days.
Can you use professional eyelash extension glue for cluster lashes?
No. Use the compatible adhesive, bond or pre-glued system specified for the cluster product. Professional eyelash extension adhesive is intended for trained technicians applying extensions to isolated natural lashes and must be kept away from the skin.
Are premade Volume fans the same as cluster lashes?
No. Although both contain multiple fibres, professional premade fans are designed for attachment to one isolated natural lash. Their length and total weight must be appropriate for that lash. Clusters use a different application system.
Can cluster lashes damage your natural lashes?
Incorrect application, excessive weight, wearing them longer than instructed or pulling them off can damage natural lashes. Follow the product's application and removal instructions. Professional extensions also require correct isolation, suitable weight and careful aftercare.
Which should you choose: cluster lashes or Classic extensions?
If you want a temporary look that you can apply using a suitable DIY system, clusters may suit your needs. If you want a personalised set maintained through regular salon appointments, professionally applied Classic extensions may be a better fit. Choose based on the finish, maintenance and application method you prefer.
