Whether your clients are after Classic Lashes, Hybrid Lashes, or even Mega Volume Lashes, the question "Do eyelash extensions damage your natural lashes?" always seems to come up.
As lash technicians, we’re often asked about the best products, including eyelash glue, and how to help clients maintain long-lasting retention with proper aftercare. So, let's dive into the science behind lash extensions and why they’re completely safe when done right.
Eyelash extensions as we know them have been around since the early 2000s. In the beginning, the lash extensions were much thicker, and isolating the natural lashes wasn’t as common as it is today—it was more like “party lashes” than today’s precision-applied classic eyelash extensions. Interestingly, the original lash materials were not vegan-friendly, a far cry from today’s synthetic, vegan options that we now use across the industry.
Fast forward to today, and the lash game has changed drastically. We’ve moved towards a more scientific approach, paying attention to the natural growth cycle of lashes and focusing on safety. Questions like “Are there Classic Lashes that are too thick?” and “How do you safely apply volume lashes?” are now essential considerations in delivering the best service possible.
Absolutely! The key to eyelash extensions being safe lies in proper application and maintenance. The main risk associated with lash extensions is rare allergic reactions to eyelash extension glue, which tend to occur more often with long-term clients than first-timers. However, it’s essential to keep clients informed about the possibility of allergic reactions, as they can happen at any time.
Another common issue is eye infections, which are usually caused by clients neglecting their aftercare. When lash extensions aren’t cleaned regularly, oil and dirt can accumulate around the lash line, leading to infections like blepharitis. This condition is uncomfortable and can even invite mites into the lashes, which feed on the buildup. Avoid this by reminding clients to clean their eyelash extensions daily with a good lash shampoo.
The only time eyelash extensions might cause damage is if the technician uses too much eyelash glue, fails to isolate the lashes properly (causing stickies), or applies lash extensions that are too thick or long for the client's natural lashes. This can result in unnecessary strain on the natural lashes, potentially causing damage over time.
Nope! When applied correctly, lash extensions should be pain-free. Some clients might feel the weight of volume lashes if it’s their first time, particularly when they look upwards, but this sensation usually goes away after a short time. The only time a client would feel any discomfort is if they’ve got stickies, which is where two or more lashes have stuck together due to improper isolation. In this case, the best advice is for the client to avoid rubbing their eyes and return to the salon to have it fixed.
If a client wakes up the next day with red or swollen eyelids, it’s likely due to an allergic reaction to the eyelash glue. In this case, advise them to come to you so the lash extensions can be safely removed using a glue remover. Remember, it’s crucial to stay within your role as a lash tech and not recommend any medication, leave that to the professionals and suggest they visit their doctor to ask for medicine which can reduce the reaction.
When it comes to creating the perfect set of eyelash extensions, it’s all about using the right products. During the consultation, assess your client's preferences—whether they want a natural eyelash extension look, a bold mascara effect, or something dramatic like wispy lashes—so that you can select lashes in the correct thickness for their lashes, to help keep them safe. The eyelash extensions themselves are made from PBT, a vegan-friendly synthetic fibre that’s highly durable. It holds its shape when exposed to heat and water, making it perfect for use in lash extensions.
Additionally, you’ll want to use a high-quality eyelash glue designed specifically for lash extensions. Before applying the extensions, prep the lashes with an eyelash primer and ensure they’re clean using lash shampoo or lash cleanser to guarantee long-lasting retention. Don’t forget to use essential tools like under eye patches, micropore tape, and eyelid tape to protect the delicate skin around the eyes during the application process, and to make application easier.
It’s critical to remind clients to take care of their eyelash extensions to keep them looking fresh, and to prevent any issues. Regular cleaning with lash shampoo or a gentle lash cleanser is a must, and stocking these essentials yourself can not only improve retention but also boost your retail sales. This aftercare routine will prevent the build-up of oils, which could lead to infections, and help your clients maintain those beautiful lashes.
