How to Tackle Glue Retention Issues for Lash Extensions

We’ve all been there—your client returns for an infill, and only 30% of their lash extensions are still hanging on. You start wondering whether they followed their aftercare routine, or what they might have been doing with the lashes in between appointments. While aftercare is crucial, the truth is, retention often comes down to your technique. So let’s look at the key factors to boost retention and avoid those dreaded client complaints.

    Why Prep is Essential

Good retention starts with proper preparation. Even experienced lash techs sometimes skip steps, but this can cause serious issues. Natural lashes need to be free of oils, makeup, and dust before any extensions are applied. Often, clients unknowingly use invisible products, like eye serums, that interfere with the bond between lash glue and natural lashes.

The first step is to thoroughly cleanse the lashes with lash shampoo to break down any oils or residue. For a deeper clean, follow up with a liquid lash cleanser. A good cleaning routine ensures strong, long-lasting classic eyelash extensions, volume lashes, or wispy lashes.

    Don’t Skip the Primer

After a deep clean—especially one that follows Lash Shampoo with Lash Cleanser—it’s essential to reintroduce moisture to the lashes. This is where eyelash primer comes into play. A primer not only hydrates, but also preps the lashes for optimal bonding. Skipping this step could result in weaker bonds and, ultimately, poor retention. Application Mastery

The application phase is where many lash technicians face retention challenges. A common issue is slow attachment—if the eyelash glue dries before the extension touches the natural lash, the bond won’t hold. To avoid this, make sure you attach the lash extensions in one quick, smooth motion, or look at a more gradually drying lash glue.

If you’re still working on your speed, opt for a slower-drying glue. However, be mindful of using just the right amount of adhesive—too much can cause stickies, while too little can weaken the bond. Aim for a good 2-3mm of attachment between the extension and the natural lash, and a microdrop of glue on the base of the extension.

    Understanding Your Glue

Your lash glue plays a major role in retention. Since eyelash glue is made from various ingredients, it’s essential to mix it properly before every use. Using a Glue Shaker will ensure the adhesive is consistent with every application.

It’s also crucial to keep your glue nozzle clean using nozzle wipes to prevent clogs. Store your glue in an airtight container to protect it from humidity, and replace it every 30 days for the best performance.

    Perfecting the Details

Don’t overlook the small details that make all the difference. Micropore tape and eyelid tape help keep the skin taut for precision, while under eye patches enhance client comfort and give you a clearer view of the lash line during application.

Achieving good retention for eyelash extensions is about more than just aftercare. It starts with thorough prep, from cleansing with lash shampoo to using the right amount of eyelash glue. Master your technique, and you’ll not only improve retention but also build a reputation as a lash artist who delivers stunning, long-lasting lashes every time.
