When it comes to eyelash extensions, there are three main styles we can offer our clients: Classic, Hybrid, and Volume. Each of these lash extension application styles has its own unique charm, and caters to different client preferences. So, what's the difference between these lash styles, and how do they stack up against each other?
Classic lashes are the OG of eyelash extensions and are still a massive hit with clients from all walks of life. If you’re new to the game, classic eyelash extensions involve applying a single lash extension to each natural lash, giving a natural yet noticeable enhancement. Whether your client wants a barely-there look or something that pushes the boundaries towards Volume, Classic lashes are the starting point for almost every lash technician. Keen to know more? Dive into our article where we break down the different looks you can achieve with Classic eyelash extensions.
Volume lashes are all about that extra oomph! This eyelash extension technique involves creating little fans of ultra-fine lash extensions, with options ranging from 2D to a whopping 35D. The thinner the lash extensions, the bigger the fan you can make. Although Volume lashes are often seen as bold or intense, they’re incredibly versatile and can be tailored to create looks from soft and subtle to full-on dramatic. Hybrid lash extensions are the best of both worlds – combining the simplicity of Classic lashes with the fullness of Volume lashes. Whether your client is after wispy lashes or something more textured and bold, Hybrid lashes can deliver. Want to explore the potential of Hybrid lashes further? Head over to our detailed blog post where we break down the various looks you can create with this flexible lash extension technique.
Classic lash extensions are applied individually to each natural lash, while Volume lash fans can vary from 2D to 35D, depending on the thickness. This means you can create a vast array of looks to suit any client’s preferences with these lash extensions.
When applying Classic eyelash extensions, you can place them on the top, bottom, or side of the natural lash, depending on its growth direction. With Volume lash fans, it all depends on how you’ve crafted the fan. If you’re using the lonely fan or wiggle method, you’ll end up with a flatter base, making it best to apply them on the top or bottom of the lash. However, if you’ve gone with the pinching method, you’ll get a slimmer, pinched base that can be applied to the sides of the natural lashes too.
Classic lash extensions are quicker to apply because it’s a straightforward process of picking, dipping in eyelash glue, and placing. On the other hand, creating Volume lash fans takes more time (unless you’re using premade fans), so even with heaps of experience, your Volume lash sets will take longer to complete than classic lash sets.
Do volume lash extensions last longer than classic eyelash extensions? It can depend. Gaps in a classic lash set are more noticeable, whereas in a volume lash set, the surrounding fans can hide a missing lash. However, if your client has sparse lashes, gaps between fans might stand out more. Also, keep in mind that while rare, eyelash extensions can sometimes fall off without their natural lash – this is a bit more likely with classic lashes since volume lash fans wrap around the natural lashes, offering a stronger bond with the eyelash glue.
Not every client wants full-on volume lashes, which is why Hybrid lashes are a great option to have on your menu. With Hybrid lash extensions, you can offer a middle ground between Classic and Volume lashes, suiting even more clients. A 50/50 mix of classic lashes and volume lashes might give your client better retention than a full classic set while being lighter than a full volume set once lashes start shedding.
Every natural lash has its own growth cycle, which is why regular infills are necessary to keep eyelash extensions looking fresh. Lash shedding is natural and should happen when the lash reaches the end of its life cycle. However, factors like seasonal changes, hormonal shifts, or new medications can speed up or slow down this cycle. It’s always a good idea to discuss this with your clients to help manage their expectations.
