Do's and Don'ts of Using Eye Pads for Lash Success

You might think choosing under-eye patches is as easy as grabbing the first pack you see and just putting them on the lower lash line, how complicated can it be, right? Well, it turns out the way you apply patches for your clients can make all the difference between a smooth, hassle-free eyelash extensions session and one where you’re so frustrated you’re tempted to bin your tweezers!

To help you out, we’ve broken down everything you need to know about under-eye patches and how they can improve your lash extensions treatments.

Choosing the Right Under-Eye Patches for Lash Extensions

Ever noticed that there’s a heap of different types of under-eye patches? Maybe you've even wondered why there are so many. The truth is, each type has its own unique benefits, making some better suited for certain clients than others.

Teflon patches are a game-changer, especially if you’ve got clients with downward-growing lashes or if you’re a bit new to applying eyelash extensions and still mastering your placement (we’ve all been there!). They have a non-stick top layer which prevents your lash glue from sticking to them, and a special gel formula that helps them stay in place, making them perfect for clients with oily skin or deep-set eyes.

Our new Foam Under Eye Patches are also a great option for clients with more oily skin, but will really be great for any client who struggles to keep their eyes completely closed throughout the treatment, as they’re a little bit thicker than your typical under eye patches.

Top Tips for Using Under-Eye Patches in Lash Extensions Treatments

Now that you’ve picked the perfect patch, here comes the tricky part: getting it to sit just right! Some clients have smaller eyes or rounder eye shapes, and you might have struggled with this before. No stress though—learning how to trim and place the patches properly will be a total game-changer for your lash extensions sessions.

Start by making sure the skin is clean. Use Protein Remover Pads to wipe the under-eye area (and don’t forget to wash the lashes with lash shampoo before you start!). Oily skin and makeup or skincare residues won’t hold those patches in place, no matter how good they are. Once the skin is dry, you’re ready to place your patches like a pro:

    • Begin at the inner corners and place the patch 1mm below the waterline.
    • Placing them too close to the waterline means that you risk irritating the eye, which could leave your client with an uncomfortable red mark on their eyeball that lasts for days and makes lash photos less Insta-worthy.
    • Place it too low, and the bottom lashes will escape, which makes it easier to accidentally glue the top and bottom lashes together!

TOP TIP: Lower the outer corner of the patch for better comfort. Some clients’ eyes will almost “suck in” the patch, so lifting the top eyelid gently and adjusting it once they’ve closed their eyes can make all the difference.

Taming Baby Lashes with Surgical Tape and Micropore Tape

Sometimes, under-eye patches don’t fully tame those pesky bottom lashes. No worries, just grab some surgical tape or micropore tape to hold them in place. This is a little easier when the client’s eyes are closed—simply tape down the baby lashes for a smooth, hassle-free eyelash extension session.

Be sure to check your patch placement during the treatment to make sure the client is comfy, and no sneaky lashes are escaping! We recommend using a lash mirror to help you check easily.

But What About Using Tape Instead of Under-Eye Patches?

You might be thinking, “Why not just use micropore tape or eyelid tape instead of patches?” Good question! Here’s a quick breakdown of the pros and cons:

    Pros of Using Tape:

    • Easily adaptable to all eye shapes and sizes
    • A single roll of micropore tape or surgical tape can last longer than a box of under-eye patches
    • Clients are less likely to have any sensitivities to the adhesive on tape, making it a good backup option if they are sensitive to any of the ingredients in the gel on under eye patches.

    Cons of Using Tape:

    • Far less comfortable for your client, especially when it’s being removed
    • Harder to adjust if you need to correct their placement mid-treatment
    • Doesn’t protect your client’s skin from sharp tweezers as well as under-eye patches do
    • Feels less luxurious—let’s face it, tape just doesn’t scream “pampering session”

Common Mistakes to Avoid with Under-Eye Patches

Let’s do a quick recap of the most common mistakes lash artists make with under-eye patches during eyelash extensions treatments:

    • Wrong size patches: If they don’t fit properly, they won’t protect the lashes as they should.
    • Too close to the eye: This leads to irritation and discomfort.
    • Too far from the eye: This lets bottom lashes escape, increasing the risk of stickies.
    • Incorrect placement: If the patch covers the inner corner lashes, it’ll lift and cause incomplete lash extensions coverage.
    • Too much pressure: Pressing too hard can shift the patch or cause discomfort, which is definitely not what you want!

TOP TIP: If you’re struggling to get your under eye patches to fit nicely for your client’s eye, make two little cuts on the bottom of the under eye patch to make them easier to position.

Who knew something as simple as an under-eye patch could make such a difference? By mastering your patch selection and placement, you’ll not only keep your clients comfortable but also ensure a flawless set of eyelash extensions every time.
