Mastering Hybrid Lashes: 5 Styling Techniques to Try | London Lash AUS Blog

Hybrid Lashes: The Ultimate in Versatility

Hybrid lashes have become a game-changer in the beauty industry since volume lashes made their debut in the early 2010s. They offer the perfect mix of classic eyelash extensions and volume lash extensions, making them a top choice for clients who aren’t sure where they land on the classic vs volume lashes spectrum. Let’s dive into the world of hybrid lashes so you’re ready to choose the perfect style for every client!

We’ve got an overview of hybrid lashes in another blog post, so check that out if you want a broader perspective, or if you’re looking to perfect your lash styling techniques, keep reading…

    Understanding Hybrid Lashes: The Basics

Hybrid lash extensions provide a fuller, fluffier look than a standard set of classic lashes but with a lighter finish than full-volume lashes. They’re ideal for clients who want the best of both worlds. What you might not realise is that hybrid lashes can range from super light and wispy lashes to deep and dramatic mega volume lash sets.

Typically, hybrid lashes are an even mix of classic lash extensions and volume lashes, alternating between classic lashes and volume fans along the lash line. While this method is popular and delivers the results clients usually expect, it’s not the only way to apply hybrid lashes!

Hybrid lashes can be applied in any lash mapping style, from basic lash map shapes to the latest trends your clients are sending you via text with those “can we do this??” messages.

    Natural Hybrid Lashes

Natural hybrid lash extensions are perfect for clients who want a subtle enhancement. This style combines single classic lashes with light volume fans, often using 0.10 or 0.07 diameter lashes and slightly wider 2D fans. The result? A soft, feathery look that adds just a touch of glamour—think of it as the “your lashes but better” look. For an even softer finish, try brown lash extensions for a gentle contrast to the usual black lashes, adding natural softness to any eyelash extension look.

Remember, it doesn’t have to be an even split between classic lashes and volume fans—use fans to fill in gaps in the lash line and apply classic lashes everywhere else for a more tailored effect.

    Dramatic Hybrid Lashes

For clients who love a bit of drama, the dramatic hybrid lash style is the way to go. This technique uses more volume lashes than classic lashes, creating a bold and striking appearance. Here’s where you might use 0.05 or 0.07 diameter lashes in 3D or 4D fans, mixed with classic lash extensions for added depth. This style is perfect for special occasions or for clients who love making a statement but aren’t ready for full volume lashes.

    Wispy Hybrid Lashes

Wispy lashes create a playful, fluttery look by mixing different lengths of both classic and volume lash extensions. This variation in length can come from the lashes themselves or how you apply them to different layers of the natural lashes. The varied lengths give the lashes that “wispy” look, similar to the natural variation in our lashes. It’s a great choice for clients who want a unique, textured appearance without too much heaviness. Plus, you can experiment with length application to find what best suits your client’s desired look.

LASH SAFETY TIP: When aiming for a wispy lash set, consider whether the length of the lash extensions is safe for the natural lashes. If you’re going more than 3 millimetres longer than the natural lash, opt for a thinner diameter to avoid weighing down the lashes. Make sure you’re using quality tools like under eye patches, eyelash primer, and micropore tape to protect your clients’ eyes and natural lashes.

Adding Depth with Textured Hybrid Lashes

Textured lashes are similar to wispy lashes but with a bit more edge. If wispy lashes are like Angel Lashes, think of textured lashes as more like a Wet Look set. They’re created by mixing different lash curls, diameters, and lengths to achieve a multi-dimensional look that adds depth and intrigue.

When applying hybrid lash extensions, you’ll generally use different thicknesses, such as 0.07 for your fans and 0.15 for the classic lashes. For a textured look, try mixing 0.07 lash fans with 0.15 classics and 0.20 flat lashes to create some eye-catching spikes. Using products like Lash Shampoo and Lash Cleanser ensures the lashes are prepped properly for application, while Eyelid Tape can help in creating the perfect lash map.

    Mega Volume Hybrid Lashes

For clients who want maximum impact, mega volume hybrid lash extensions are the way to go. This style allows you to add spikes and texture while giving you room to be creative.

Fluffy mega volume lashes are made using 0.03 - 0.05 lash extensions. To get the best results, we recommend our mega volume lash tweezers, which offer the grip you need to control those larger fans and have finer tips than your average volume lash tweezers, making it easier to see what you’re doing!

Since mega volume fans are denser and darker than typical volume sets, you’ll want to use thicker classic lash extensions to balance them out. For the safety of natural lashes, it’s best to use flat lash extensions. Don’t forget to use the right eyelash glue to ensure the extensions stay put, and have glue remover on hand for when it’s time to take them off. Check out our blog post on flat lashes to learn why they’re essential in your lash kit.

Lastly, for a wispier mega volume finish, try using easy fan lashes, which have a mix of lengths on each strip, giving you effortless texture.

Hybrid lashes are incredibly versatile and perfect for unleashing your creativity (though volume lashes are also pretty versatile). Whether your client wants a subtle, natural look or a dramatic, show-stopping appearance, there’s a hybrid lash style to suit their needs. As with all lash extensions, proper aftercare is crucial to maintain the beauty and longevity of the lashes. So, make sure your clients book their lash fill appointments to keep their lashes looking fresh and fabulous!
