Identifying the roadblocks in your lash pretreatment

1. Neglecting the fundamentals?
A crucial oversight can be the underestimation of Lash Shampoo's importance. Not any facial cleanser will suffice, we must underscore the indispensability of a specialised Eyelash Shampoo! These products are uniquely formulated to remove makeup, oils, and the day’s debris gently yet thoroughly, safeguarding the natural lashes and surrounding skin. Missing this key step could predispose your clients to retention challenges.
2. Incomplete rinsing?
We've already emphasised the significance of selecting a top tier Eyelash Shampoo, especially one tailored for lash extensions. Such cleansers prime the lashes for the adhesive, facilitating a stronger bond. However, correct usage is paramount, a gentle, comprehensive cleanse is non negotiable. Hence, if your application technique is lacking, even with the right shampoo, this might be the crux of the problem. Inadequate rinsing can result in suboptimal adhesion and compromised retention.
3. Misapplying product?
The method of applying your pretreatment products also plays a critical role, as incorrect application could be undermining your pretreatment's effectiveness. For instance, overusing Cleanser or Primer might be detrimental to the desired outcome. It's crucial to adhere strictly to the product guidelines, ensuring you're applying the right quantities. Let’s dissect the application process for each pretreatment component:
Lash Shampoo: Aim for a single pump of foamy Lash Shampoo applied with a Lash Cleansing Brush, massaged gently along the lash line. Thorough rinsing with cool or lukewarm water or a saline solution, followed by gentle patting dry is essential. Residual shampoo on the lashes can negatively impact retention.
Protein Removing Pads: You can't go wrong with Protein Removing Pads. Whether wrapping a pad around your finger for a gentle cleanse or employing a microfiber brush for a deeper clean, especially useful for infills, the goal is clear, thorough lash line cleansing.
Lash Cleanser: Apply a mere drop onto a microswab, removing any excess before use. Then, with another microswab, sandwich the natural lashes and apply the Cleanser with care, focusing on the roots and application zones. Common errors include using too much or too little Cleanser, potentially affecting retention or risking irritation. Utilising a wooden spatula can offer more control and act as a barrier during application.
NOTE ON PRODUCT USAGE: The market offers a variety of Cleanser and Primer combinations, each with its specific application. While some brands might opt for an alcohol based Primer versus a water based Cleanser, we advocate a different approach. Knowing the correct sequence, Cleanser followed by Primer can significantly enhance your results.
Primer for Lashes: Given that cleansers are often alcohol based, they can leave the lashes feeling quite dry (which is the reason you should avoid putting it on the lash tips and skin!). Therefore, it's crucial to use a Primer right after to re-moisturise the lashes and create an ideal surface for the lash adhesive to stick properly. Missing this crucial step might be the root of your problem! Be mindful when applying the Primer; a tiny dab on your microfiber brush is all that's needed.
Enhancing Retention and Speed: Theoretically, applying the Retention DUO as per the guidelines turns the natural lashes into a 'magnetic' base, eliminating the need to press the extensions against the natural lashes for an extended period for effective adherence, thus boosting retention and reducing the duration of your treatment. Nonetheless, the Booster is not advised for those new to lash extensions since mastering the technique is key, and any misplaced extensions due to premature curing of the lash glue by the Booster won't be correctable. Therefore, it's best avoided by beginners to prevent adversely impacting the end result. However, if you've mastered lash placement and are confident in your skills, feel free to use it to your advantage!
4. Wrong order application?
A frequently overlooked element is the sequence in which pretreatment products are applied, which is crucial for maximising their effectiveness. Just as makeup primer precedes foundation, the correct order of lash prep products is foundational for optimal results. Each product is designed for a specific step in the process, underscoring the importance of adherence to the intended order for peak outcomes.

Overlooking steps, such as bypassing the use of a Lash Cleanser or omitting Primer, can compromise results. Thinking of skipping Protein Pads and Cleanser because you've used Shampoo? Remember, any lingering substances on the natural lashes can adversely affect the longevity of the lash extensions, including residues from Lash Shampoo.
Forgoing Primer but completing the rest of your prep? This oversight can delay the curing time of the eyelash glue, potentially misaligning the lashes and affecting the uniformity of the set. Slow-drying glue might also lead to 'stickies', a frustration for both you and your client.
